But it’s not just about catching a Ph.D. student out. It’s that feeling of trust being quietly eroded. Just imagine… You’ve spent time supporting them, watching them struggle, improve, try, and then suddenly there’s this polished, inauthentic piece that skips the whole process.
It’s like watching someone skip the climb after you’ve been cheering them on halfway up the mountain—coaching them through the steep bits, encouraging them when they lose footing—and then suddenly they show up at the summit in a helicopter and say, ‘Look, I made it!’ And you just think... that’s not the point.
Sigh.
It’s not even about perfection. It’s about ownership (yes, here we go again). Growth. Voice. Struggle. Seeing them wrestle with a sentence and finally get it right—that’s the real reward, for them and for us, their teachers and supervisors. (So now I’m thinking… Is it?)
When a student turns in something AI-written, it’s not just that the work isn’t theirs. It’s that they’ve opted out of the very process that matters most. And that hurts when you’ve been in their corner, trying to guide them through it with care.
I need a drink. Mr. Strickland, where are all the old-school slackers, who would own up to their laziness and not pretend to be anything else? Better make that a drink, a time machine and a very long nap.

Putting in effort takes heart and time. Using AI is getting likes, superficial but complies with my MK Ultra programming, requires 1% rain capacity and provides more time to spend on social media. I'ts about priorities get it..... lol
ReplyDeleteYeah, I get it. Hard work, guts and creativity aren't high on that list.
DeleteThe struggle is what makes people stronger. It makes the reward better. The next generation will not know true victory.
ReplyDeleteWell said, Alex. But what if people are afraid of.... struggles and confrontations.... Well, you get weak people, and weak people lead to big problems (as we have seen), and so we need strong people to solve them.
DeleteWorld today thinks we need to indulge everybodys dreams even if they have zero talent. I am currently translating a book which literally has no plot and I am on page 350. So many people want to be writers today even though they have no skills for it, they have clumsy sentences, no characterization, no moral depth and message, no story, no plots, twists, dynamics, and it is because they did not grow up on Tolstoy and Dostoevskiy like us but on Harry Plopper and other garbage.
ReplyDeleteAmen to that, Dezzzmeister. I couldn't agree more.
DeleteHow are you feeling these days, oh, Randy, o, Mandy, still hot and bothered? Have you heard that universities and high schools in my country haven't been working for more than 100 days now, protesting against the dictator? We are currently worried the students will lose their year, but you gotta fight for the justice. Spread the word at your university. A convoy or 500 students are currently driving bikes from Serbia through Hungary, Austria and Slovakia all the way to Strasbourg to plea there with the EU officials. That is thousands of km on bikes on zero night temps.
DeleteI hadn't heard, but I'm all for striking when it needs to be done. As for how I'm feeling: C minus at best. So wish I could retire. Too bad a lack of money remains to be this guys ball and chain. Money, money, money... must be funny.... in a rich man's world.
DeleteEverything I’ve read that’s written with AI seems so generic. Is it fairly easy to discover?
ReplyDeleteIt is, Bijoux. Just check Adam's comment below.
DeleteIn a world of rapid content, let's champion authentic human voices. Writing our own posts fosters genuine connection, builds trust, and reflects our unique perspectives. While AI has its place, our own words carry the weight of experience and emotion, enriching online communities with genuine thought and fostering deeper understanding. Let's value the soul in the sentence. #AuthenticWriting
ReplyDeleteAI made this 😂
No need to tell me, Adam. I could tell 100%. I so hate that tone of voice.
DeleteI've used a few AI pictures in the past. But I've never used anything written by AI. It just seems so fake and unauthentic. Why even bother if you're going to take the easy way out and not even try to do it yourself. They think they are so intelligent and can get away with it and that's sad.
ReplyDeleteSo true, Mary. If I could retire today, I would. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteHi Blue, Our buds who are still teaching in the English Department are in disbelief about the blatant use of AI on English papers.
ReplyDeleteWe feel your pain.
